Emergency Vehicle Collisions in Missouri
The accident on US-65 highlights the unique risks posed when emergency vehicles respond to calls with lights and sirens. Drivers are required under Missouri law to yield the right of way to authorized emergency vehicles, but collisions still occur when motorists fail to react quickly or misjudge their movements. In this case, the crash not only caused injuries but also disabled a vehicle that was en route to assist others.
Across Missouri, crashes involving emergency responders can create a ripple effect, delaying aid to other incidents and increasing hazards on already busy roadways. These collisions often happen at intersections or during lane changes, when other drivers may not notice or properly accommodate approaching emergency vehicles.
Safety officials urge drivers to remain alert, pull to the right, and stop when they see flashing lights or hear sirens. Allowing emergency responders a clear path is critical not only for their safety but also for the safety of those awaiting assistance.
