Benton County, MO (May 7, 2025) – A 40-year-old bicyclist sustained injuries Sunday afternoon in a collision with a vehicle on northbound US-65 at the MO-83 ramp. The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. and was investigated by Trooper B.G. Katzing of Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop A.
According to the incident report, the bicyclist, who was identified as an adult male experiencing homelessness, was traveling northbound on the ramp from MO-83 to US-65 when he collided with a white Kia Stinger also heading northbound on the highway. The Kia, driven by a 44-year-old man from Columbia, MO, sustained minor damage and was driven from the scene.
The bicyclist, who was not wearing any safety equipment, was injured in the crash and transported by Warsaw Lincoln Ambulance to Bothwell Regional Health Center in Sedalia for treatment. His bicycle—a Mongoose XR15—was taken from the scene by a friend. The driver of the Kia was uninjured and was properly restrained at the time of the incident.
No citations or additional details have been released at this time. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the crash remains ongoing.
We extend our best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to the injured bicyclist.
Bicycle-Vehicle Collisions and Highway Safety in Missouri
Crashes involving bicycles and motor vehicles often result in injuries to the cyclist, particularly when the incident occurs on or near highway ramps. Bicycles lack the structural protection of motor vehicles, making even low-speed collisions hazardous. In this case, the collision on a high-speed highway connector could have resulted in more serious injuries were it not for a quick EMS response and favorable conditions.
US-65 is a major route through Benton County, and the on-ramp from MO-83 presents a complex traffic pattern for both vehicles and non-motorized travelers. Bicyclists navigating these areas often face elevated risks due to limited shoulders, fast-moving traffic, and minimal infrastructure dedicated to non-vehicular traffic.
The lack of a helmet or other protective gear likely contributed to the injuries sustained in this crash. Advocates continue to push for improved safety awareness and infrastructure for bicyclists on Missouri’s highways, especially in rural areas where riders may share the road with high-speed traffic.
For cyclists, particularly those without permanent housing or access to private transportation, bikes are a vital means of mobility. When crashes occur, recovery can be especially difficult due to limited financial resources or healthcare access. Prompt medical care, community support, and advocacy play critical roles in helping injured cyclists recover and regain stability.
