Berlin, CT (August 20, 2025) – A 34-year-old man from New Britain sustained serious injuries Tuesday night in a violent crash on Route 9 South near exit 33 in Berlin. The collision occurred around 7:20 p.m. and involved a rollover after an initial impact with another vehicle.
According to Connecticut State Police, the crash began when the New Britain driver, traveling in the center lane, veered into the left lane and struck a Toyota Tacoma. After the initial impact, his vehicle careened off the highway, struck a guardrail, and entered the grassy median. It rolled over before finally coming to rest in the median.
The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was uninjured and declined medical attention at the scene. Emergency crews arrived quickly and transported the New Britain driver to Hartford Hospital for treatment of serious, but unspecified, injuries.
Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted as investigators worked to document the crash site and clear debris. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the injured driver, and no charges have been announced as the investigation remains ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver, and we hope for a full and timely recovery.
Rollover Crashes and Injury Risks on Connecticut Highways
Tuesday night’s crash on Route 9 South illustrates the severe dangers posed by high-speed rollover incidents—especially when secondary collisions with guardrails and medians occur. Vehicles that leave the roadway at speed can easily lose control, flip, or impact fixed objects, dramatically increasing the risk of traumatic injury.
Connecticut highways, including Route 9, are frequently traveled by commuters moving at high speeds. A brief lapse in lane control, such as veering into another lane, can result in devastating consequences in these settings. In this case, the rollover and guardrail collision highlight the force of the crash and the likelihood of significant trauma to the driver.
Serious injuries from rollover crashes often include head trauma, spinal injuries, internal bleeding, and multiple fractures. Victims require immediate medical evaluation, often followed by extended recovery and rehabilitation. Even when only one party is injured, the ripple effects of such crashes can extend to lost income, psychological stress, and long-term physical limitations.
As this crash remains under investigation, authorities will examine possible contributing factors such as driver distraction, impairment, fatigue, or vehicle malfunction.
