Berlin Twp, OH (September 1, 2025) – A deadly collision involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle left one young man dead Sunday night in Erie County, prompting an ongoing investigation by local authorities.
The crash occurred shortly before 9:00 p.m. on US Route 6 in Berlin Township. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, 23-year-old Cade Gwynn of Huron was traveling westbound on a 2018 Kawasaki motorcycle when the driver of a 2014 Chevrolet Malibu attempted to turn left into a private driveway.
Troopers reported that the Malibu failed to yield during the turn, placing it directly in the path of Gwynn’s motorcycle. The resulting impact sent Gwynn off his bike and onto the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Investigators confirmed that Gwynn was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The driver of the Chevrolet remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. At this time, neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to be contributing factors. No criminal charges have been filed as of this report.
Crews from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office and OSHP’s Sandusky Post responded to assist with traffic control and crash scene processing. The area was temporarily closed off to allow for a thorough investigation.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Cade Gwynn during this time of profound loss.
Motorcycle Accidents in Ohio
The heartbreaking crash on US Route 6 in Berlin Township serves as a sobering example of how quickly lives can be lost on Ohio’s roads, especially when motorcycles are involved. In this case, a left-turning vehicle’s failure to yield ended in a fatal outcome for a 23-year-old rider.
Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable in traffic due to their smaller profile, lack of protective barriers, and the frequency with which other drivers overlook them in high-speed or low-light situations. In rural and suburban parts of Erie County, evening traffic often involves reduced visibility and sudden turns onto driveways or side roads—creating a dangerous environment for those on two wheels.
Statistics from the Ohio Department of Public Safety indicate that failure-to-yield crashes involving motorcycles are a recurring issue. These incidents frequently occur during left-hand turns, where drivers misjudge the speed or distance of oncoming motorcycles. Sadly, as was the case with Cade Gwynn, even a momentary lapse can prove fatal.
Helmet use remains a critical factor in survivability, though Ohio law allows riders over 18 to ride without one in certain circumstances. While it is unknown whether a helmet would have changed the outcome in this crash, the absence of head protection is notable given the severity of the impact.
As the investigation continues, the Gwynn family and others affected by similar tragedies face more than emotional grief—they must also contend with sudden financial burdens, legal questions, and the need for long-term support. For those impacted by motorcycle accidents, understanding their rights and options for recovery can be an essential part of the healing process.
