Big Lake, MN (September 5, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a serious pedestrian crash in Big Lake on Thursday evening that left an 11-year-old boy with injuries. The incident occurred just after 5:15 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 10 and Highway 25, a busy junction in Sherburne County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2003 Chevy Suburban was traveling westbound on Hwy 10 when it struck a young pedestrian while crossing the intersection with Hwy 25. Emergency responders from Big Lake Fire/Rescue and Sherburne County EMS arrived promptly at the scene. The child, a resident of Big Lake, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by CentraCare ambulance to Children’s Hospital for further care.
The driver of the Suburban, identified as 49-year-old Henry Schelhass of Big Lake, was reportedly unharmed and did not require medical attention. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was not a factor in the crash. Road conditions were wet at the time, which may have played a role in the collision. The vehicle’s airbags did not deploy, and the cause of the incident remains under active investigation.
As officials work to determine the contributing factors, the community is rallying with concern for the injured child and his family. No additional details have been released at this time.
Our hearts go out to the young victim and his loved ones during this difficult time, and we wish him a full and fast recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in Minnesota
Incidents like the one at Hwy 10 and Hwy 25 in Big Lake highlight the particular dangers pedestrians face—even at controlled intersections. Although less common than vehicle-on-vehicle crashes, pedestrian collisions are often more severe, especially when children are involved. In this case, the crash occurred during early evening hours on a wet roadway—factors that can significantly increase risk.
Highway 10 and Highway 25 intersect in one of the busier traffic zones of Big Lake, where local and through traffic converge. The complexity of multiple lanes, turn options, and variable weather conditions often create challenges for both drivers and pedestrians. When visibility is limited and pavement is slick, even brief distractions can result in tragic consequences.
This incident underscores the critical need for increased safety measures near intersections that see high levels of both vehicular and foot traffic. Enhanced lighting, visible crosswalks, and speed enforcement are just a few ways communities can help protect their most vulnerable members—especially children.
For families affected by pedestrian crashes, the aftermath involves far more than physical injury. Emotional trauma, medical bills, and uncertainty about legal or insurance steps can all add to the burden. Accessing trustworthy support is key to navigating this difficult period and ensuring proper care and justice for those hurt.
