Blue Rock Twp, OH (August 7, 2025) – Emergency crews responded to a devastating multi-vehicle accident on Ohio 60 that claimed the life of a McConnelsville woman and left several others injured early Tuesday afternoon.
Emergency responders from Blue Rock Township arrived at the scene around 1 p.m. on August 6, following reports of a chain-reaction collision involving multiple commercial and passenger vehicles. First responders, including medics and local fire crews, provided immediate aid to individuals suffering from a variety of injuries sustained in the wreck.
The tragic incident began when a northbound commercial truck operated by 52-year-old Scott A. Lively of Zanesville struck a vehicle in front of him, driven by 46-year-old Mary Russell of McConnelsville. The impact pushed Russell’s vehicle into a Jeep driven by Alena Walters, which in turn was forced off the right side of the road. Lively’s truck continued forward, crashing into the rear of a tanker trailer connected to a semi-truck driven by Michael Waters.
Mary Russell tragically died at the scene due to the severity of her injuries. Lively was transported by emergency medical services to Genesis Hospital with serious injuries. Walters and Waters sustained minor injuries and were also taken to Genesis for evaluation and treatment.
Authorities with the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed that the crash remains under investigation as they work to determine contributing factors and whether additional parties may have been involved.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Mary Russell. We also extend heartfelt support to all who were injured and impacted by this terrible event.
Truck Accidents in Ohio
Large commercial vehicles traveling on state routes like OH-60 often operate alongside much smaller passenger cars, leading to heightened risks during traffic incidents. Tuesday’s tragic crash in Blue Rock Township highlights just how quickly chain-reaction collisions involving heavy trucks can escalate and cause devastating outcomes.
Truck collisions frequently lead to catastrophic damage due to the sheer size and momentum of the vehicles involved. In this incident, the northbound commercial truck’s inability to stop in time set off a domino effect—first striking Mary Russell’s vehicle, which then collided with another, and ultimately causing additional impact with a semi-truck’s trailer. This sequence reveals a common pattern in multi-vehicle accidents involving commercial drivers: an initial failure to reduce speed or maintain safe following distance can trigger a deadly cascade of events.
Ohio’s transportation network includes many rural and semi-rural routes where commercial and agricultural traffic is heavy. Roads like OH-60 often lack multiple lanes or advanced shoulder room, making it difficult for drivers to avoid hazards when space runs out. This makes attention to safe driving distances and reduced speeds critical—especially for trucks with increased braking times.
For victims and families affected by truck-related collisions, the road to recovery can be long and costly. Medical expenses, lost income, emotional distress, and permanent injuries are common consequences. In fatal cases like that of Mary Russell, families are often left grappling with unimaginable grief alongside financial uncertainty.
Authorities continue to gather evidence from the crash site, including vehicle data, eyewitness statements, and road conditions, to determine what actions—if any—could have prevented this tragedy. As this investigation proceeds, it serves as a sobering reminder of the vigilance required by all drivers, particularly those operating large commercial trucks.
If you or someone you know was affected by this accident or a similar event involving large vehicles, it may be essential to seek help in navigating the aftermath—both emotionally and legally.
