Boone County, IL (January 16, 2026) – A tragic head-on collision involving a semi-truck claimed the life of a Rockford man Wednesday afternoon in Boone County, according to local authorities.
The fatal crash occurred around 4:00 p.m. on January 14 along U.S. Route 20 near Shattuck Rd. Deputies with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office reported that 78-year-old Richard Todd was traveling westbound when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming eastbound semi.
Todd died at the scene from his injuries, officials confirmed. The driver of the semi sustained minor injuries and was evaluated by emergency personnel.
The roadway was partially shut down while investigators documented the crash and crews worked to clear the wreckage. Authorities have not yet determined what caused Todd’s vehicle to veer into the opposing lane, and the investigation remains ongoing.
