Brandon, VT (August 18, 2025) – A Massachusetts man was injured Friday afternoon when he was struck by the mirror of a passing pickup truck while cycling on Union Street in Brandon. The incident occurred around 12:16 PM on August 16, 2025, and involved three cyclists traveling southbound.
According to Vermont State Police, 65-year-old Sherman Chan of Lexington, MA, was riding in the middle of a group of three cyclists when a 2019 Ram 1500 pickup truck driven by 43-year-old Edward Loso of Goshen passed too closely. The truck’s right-side mirror struck Chan, causing injuries to his left shoulder and left side of his back.
Emergency crews from the Brandon Area Rescue Squad responded to the scene and transported Chan to Rutland Regional Medical Center for treatment. His condition has not been publicly updated, but police described the injuries as suspected and non-life-threatening.
Loso, who was uninjured in the crash, was found to be in violation of a legal restriction requiring an ignition interlock device in his vehicle. Authorities noted the truck sustained only minor damage to its passenger mirror. Loso was issued a citation and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
We extend our wishes for a full recovery to Mr. Chan following this incident.
Bicycle Safety and Motorist Responsibility in Vermont
Friday’s collision on Union Street brings renewed focus to the ongoing safety challenges facing cyclists on Vermont roads. As biking continues to grow in popularity for recreation and commuting, the need for safe passing practices becomes even more critical—especially on narrower or rural routes like those in Brandon.
Vermont law requires drivers to maintain a safe distance when overtaking cyclists. This includes ensuring enough clearance to prevent contact with side mirrors or other vehicle parts. Failure to do so—even unintentionally—can result in serious injuries for vulnerable road users, as seen in this case.
Moreover, the fact that the driver was operating the vehicle without a required ignition interlock device raises further concerns. These devices are typically court-mandated for individuals with prior DUI-related offenses, and failure to comply can represent a serious lapse in legal and public safety obligations.
Cyclists riding in groups, like the one Mr. Chan was part of, are especially at risk when drivers do not adjust their speed or give ample space. Drivers must remain vigilant, patient, and cautious—particularly when navigating shared roads.
