Brentwood, CA (June 25, 2025) – A tragic early-morning collision on Interstate 405 in Brentwood claimed the lives of a veteran Los Angeles police sergeant and another individual Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and the California Highway Patrol.
The deadly crash occurred around 2 a.m. on the southbound side of the San Diego (405) Freeway, just north of Moraga Dr. Authorities say 53-year-old Sgt. Shiou Deng was responding to a traffic accident when the fatal events unfolded.
According to officials, Sgt. Deng, a respected LAPD veteran, came upon a collision scene and stopped his patrol SUV to assist those involved. He activated his rear amber lights to alert approaching traffic and exited his vehicle in an effort to protect and aid the motorists.
Tragically, while outside of his SUV, Sgt. Deng was struck by an oncoming vehicle. He was transported to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center with critical injuries but was later pronounced dead.
The initial crash also claimed the life of a man believed to be in his mid-30s. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A third person sustained injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not been disclosed.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the other individuals involved. CHP continues to investigate the sequence of events and whether factors such as speed or visibility played a role.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Sgt. Deng, as well as to the loved ones of the second victim. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.
Fatal Crashes Involving Emergency Responders in California
The tragic death of Sgt. Shiou Deng on I-405 highlights the grave dangers that first responders face—even when performing acts of service to protect others. His death marks another instance where a traffic incident escalated into a multi-fatality event, underscoring the urgent need for driver awareness and adherence to California’s “Move Over” laws.
Highways such as I-405, which stretch through dense metropolitan areas like Los Angeles, see frequent collisions due to high speeds, lane congestion, and narrow shoulders. When responders like Sgt. Deng stop to assist, they often do so with minimal protection from fast-approaching traffic. Despite amber lights and standard protocol, visibility and driver inattention remain significant risks—particularly in early morning hours.
This incident also draws attention to the chain reaction nature of freeway collisions. Initial crashes often lead to secondary incidents when bystanders or responders are outside their vehicles. The death of both Sgt. Deng and the second victim reflects the compounding danger when multiple vehicles and drivers are involved in chaotic, unlit scenes.
The community impact of losing a veteran law enforcement officer is profound. Sgt. Deng’s service and his final act—risking his safety to help others—represent the highest ideals of public duty. Families affected by fatal crashes must cope not only with emotional devastation but also with practical challenges including funeral planning, investigations, and legal processes.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge drivers to slow down near accident scenes, move over for emergency vehicles, and remain alert at all times.
