Broken Bow, NE (May 14, 2025)– A two-vehicle collision north of Broken Bow on Tuesday evening claimed the life of a 22-year-old driver, according to the Custer County Sheriff’s Office. The Nebraska State Patrol also responded and assisted in the investigation.
The fatal crash occurred around 6:30 p.m. when a Pontiac Grand Prix was traveling west on Memorial Drive and attempted to turn in front of a northbound 2014 Ford F-350 on Nebraska Highway 2. The pickup, driven by an 80-year-old man, struck the Pontiac during the turn.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported the driver of the Pontiac to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Authorities confirmed that the young driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. His name is currently being withheld pending notification of family.
The driver of the Ford F-350 was not injured in the collision. No citations have been reported, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Turn-Related Crashes and Seat Belt Safety in Rural Nebraska
Left-turn collisions at intersections like Memorial Drive and Highway 2 are a significant safety concern in rural Nebraska. These crashes often result from misjudging oncoming vehicle speed or attempting to beat traffic on high-speed corridors. When heavy vehicles such as a Ford F-350 are involved, the smaller vehicle typically sustains the most damage.
The outcome of Tuesday’s crash is further compounded by the lack of seat belt use—a factor that continues to be one of the leading contributors to fatal outcomes in rural accidents. Even with rapid EMS response, unrestrained occupants face increased risk of ejection, head trauma, and internal injuries.
Custer County officials continue to encourage all drivers—especially younger motorists—to wear seat belts and use extreme caution when crossing or turning onto highways. As communities like Broken Bow grow, so too does the need for enhanced intersection safety and public awareness.
