Butler, MO (September 10, 2025) – First responders, including paramedics, assessed and treated individuals hurt in the crash following a two-vehicle accident early Tuesday morning in Butler County. The collision occurred at approximately 6:18 a.m. on Hwy 53, about half a mile south of Poplar Bluff.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Troop E, the crash happened when a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, traveling eastbound, pulled into the path of a northbound 2015 Buick Enclave. The Enclave subsequently struck the Grand Caravan, resulting in both vehicles sustaining total damage. Both were towed from the scene by Rushins.
Emergency responders from Poplar Bluff tended to an 80-year-old female driver of the Buick Enclave, who suffered injuries. She was transported by ambulance to Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center for treatment. The 61-year-old male driver of the Dodge Grand Caravan was reportedly unharmed and remained at the scene.
The crash is under active investigation as officials work to determine all factors contributing to the incident. Our thoughts are with those involved, and we wish the injured driver a swift recovery.
Elderly Drivers and Intersection Safety in Missouri
This incident on Hwy 53 highlights some of the unique risks faced by older drivers and underscores the critical importance of intersection safety. While this accident resulted in only minor injuries, it occurred under circumstances that could have easily led to more severe consequences.
Statistics from the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety show that drivers aged 65 and older are more likely to be involved in intersection-related crashes. Slower reaction times, vision limitations, and challenges judging distance can all contribute to higher crash risks for elderly drivers.
Moreover, intersections on rural highways such as those outside Poplar Bluff often lack signal control, increasing the likelihood of vehicle conflicts during turns or when merging into traffic. Motorists of all ages should take extra care when navigating these stretches, especially during the early morning hours when visibility and alertness may be diminished.
As always, safety belts are vital—and in this case, the injured driver was reportedly not wearing one. Authorities continually emphasize the life-saving benefits of buckling up every time, no matter the distance traveled or familiarity with the route.
