Calhoun County, MI (April 23, 2025) – Two people were hospitalized following a serious wrong-way crash on I-94 early Tuesday morning, which involved an intoxicated driver who has since been arrested.
According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on April 22, when a pickup truck traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-94 collided with a passenger vehicle. The impact left both occupants of the struck car injured.
Deputies from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and confirmed that both victims were transported to a nearby hospital. The male occupant sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening. No further update has been provided on the second victim’s condition at this time.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 50-year-old man from Lansing, was found to be highly intoxicated and was immediately taken into custody. He was lodged at the Calhoun County Jail and is facing criminal charges related to the crash. His identity has not yet been publicly released.
As a result of the crash, eastbound lanes of I-94 were shut down for several hours while emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. All lanes have since reopened.
Investigators are continuing their work, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Lt. Curtis Smith of the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families, and we hope for a full recovery for all those impacted.
Wrong-Way Crashes and Impaired Driving in Michigan
Wrong-way crashes are among the most deadly traffic incidents due to the high likelihood of head-on collisions and the speed at which they often occur. The crash on I-94 in Calhoun County is a sobering reminder of the severe risks posed by impaired driving—particularly when it results in a vehicle entering an opposing lane of travel.
According to Michigan traffic safety data, intoxicated driving remains a leading cause of fatal and serious injury crashes statewide. When alcohol or drugs impair a driver’s ability to judge direction, distance, or reaction time, the consequences can be catastrophic for everyone on the road.
In this case, the pickup truck driver’s decision to get behind the wheel while intoxicated placed multiple lives in jeopardy. That two individuals were injured—and not killed—is fortunate, but the trauma and disruption caused by such crashes often extends far beyond physical injury.
Law enforcement agencies across Michigan have increased patrols and public awareness efforts aimed at reducing drunk driving, but these tragedies continue to occur. Continued education, enforcement, and community engagement are critical components in preventing impaired driving and protecting lives.
For those injured in a crash involving a wrong-way or intoxicated driver, the road to recovery can be physically, emotionally, and financially difficult. Navigating the legal implications and seeking proper support are essential steps in reclaiming peace of mind and stability.
