Chico sits at the northeast edge of the Sacramento Valley, split by Bidwell Park, and it's home to about 105,000 people.

Our team keeps a close watch on Chico’s main roads, from SR 99 and SR 32 to the busy corridors around Chico State, the Chico Mall, and the Esplanade. We see firsthand how a growing student population and busy intersections can create challenges for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Notably, the city’s safety plan found that pedestrians were involved in most of Chico’s deadly crashes in recent years, a reminder of just how important it is to stay alert on local streets.

When a crash happens in Chico, our team is here to help you figure out which agency handled your report and how to get a copy. Navigating the aftermath of an accident can be confusing, but you don’t have to handle it alone.

After you've been involved in one, where it happened matters, since crashing inside city limits or out on a county road or highway decides which agency writes your report and where you'll go to get a copy.

Getting a Copy of Your Chico Crash Report

The Chico Police Department works crashes on city streets. The California Highway Patrol’s Chico Area office, at 413 Southgate Avenue, patrols SR 99, SR 32, and the unincorporated county roads of northern Butte County. On the in-town stretches of SR 32, note which agency’s officer came out before you ask for a copy.

The Chico Police Department is located at 1460 Humboldt Road. To get a copy of your report, fill out the Report/Incident Records Request form (which you’ll find on the department’s forms page) and submit it through the city’s NextRequest online portal. You can also contact the records staff at [email protected] or (530) 897-4910. The form can be used by victims, parents or guardians of involved juveniles, and insurance company representatives.

A police report from the city costs $10, according to Chico’s 2026-27 fee schedule. You can pay by check, cash, or card, and then choose to pick up your report in person or have it mailed to you.

If the CHP handled your crash, you’ll need to use the CHP 190 Collision Request Form. For full details on the statewide process, see our California crash report guide.

If you’re unsure which agency responded, or you’d rather not deal with the paperwork, we can get a copy of your report for you at no cost.

The California Office of Traffic Safety’s 2023 rankings are the latest numbers for Chico. They combine injuries and deaths into a single total, so there’s no separate count for fatalities. In 2023, the total was about half of what it was in 2022, though OTS didn’t explain the drop. Out of 62 California cities of its size, Chico ranked 62nd for total crash victims in 2023 (where 1st is the worst), and 15th for seniors 65 and older, with 7 hurt or killed.

Older stats come from the city’s 2021 Local Road Safety Plan, which looked at crashes from 2014 to 2019 within city limits, including state routes. There were 101 crashes with serious injuries during that period, and pedestrians died at 12 intersections, 7 of which had no traffic signal. Of 16 fatal crashes in the plan’s lighting review, 6 happened at night under street lights, with 4 of those involving pedestrians.

Chico Corridors and Intersections With the Most Crashes

The city’s 2021 Local Road Safety Plan listed the segments and intersections where Chico’s crashes piled up from 2014 to 2019. The city adopted an updated plan in 2026; the counts below are from the 2021 plan and cover those six years.

  1. Mangrove Avenue and Cohasset Road, from Vallombrosa Avenue to Eaton Road: This segment saw 49 crashes, the highest of any listed in the plan, at a rate of 15.9 crashes per mile. Three Mangrove intersections stood out for frequent crashes: East 5th Avenue (38 crashes), East 9th Avenue (27, including 3 serious), and East 3rd Avenue (20, including 1 fatal and 1 serious).
  2. Esplanade at East Avenue: This signalized intersection had 35 crashes, including one fatality. Elsewhere on the Esplanade, 1st Avenue had 31 crashes and 11th Avenue had a fatal crash. The plan also includes an Esplanade Safety and Accessibility Improvements project.
  3. East Avenue, from SR 99 to Cussick Avenue: This stretch saw 37 crashes, the highest crash rate of any segment in the plan (37.3 crashes per mile). East Avenue at Marigold Avenue was the site of a fatal crash.
  4. Nord Avenue (SR 32) at West Sacramento Avenue: This intersection had 39 crashes. The segment of Nord Avenue and Walnut Street from Lindo Avenue to 8th Street had 36 crashes (including 1 fatal), and SR 32 at 8th Street saw 14 crashes (1 fatal, 1 serious). The plan also lists a reconstruction project for SR 32 along Walnut, Nord, 8th, and 9th.
  5. Cohasset Road at the SR 99 northbound ramps: The plan counted 30 crashes at this intersection, where Cohasset meets the northbound freeway ramps.
