Reporting a Crash in Oakland, CA

The Oakland Police Department responds to crashes that happen on city streets. If your crash happened on a freeway or state route, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will handle it. The CHP’s Oakland Area office is at 3601 Telegraph Avenue, near the intersection of SR 24 and I-580, and is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is responsible for unincorporated areas of the county and for patrolling Oakland International Airport.

You can get OPD collision reports from the Traffic Investigations Unit at the Eastmont Substation, located at 2651 73rd Avenue. They’re open Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and their phone number is (510) 777-8570. Copies cost $25, whether you request them in person or by mail, and you can pay with cash, Visa, Mastercard, money order, or check. If you’re requesting by mail, include a self-addressed, stamped, trackable envelope, plus either the report number or the date, location, and names of those involved, along with the $25 payment. For online requests, the city uses BuyCrash, which charges $30 total (including a $5 online fee). You can search online by report number, by date and names, or by name and street.

Reports are usually available 60 to 90 days after the crash. If you weren’t involved in the crash, you’ll need written permission from someone who was, or a death certificate if it applies. Fatal collision reports can only be requested in person or by mail, not online.

To get a CHP report, fill out form CHP 190 and send it to the CHP office by mail or bring it in person, along with a copy of your ID or a notarized signature. The fee is $10 for up to 25 pages, payable by check or money order if you mail your request. Also, if anyone was hurt or killed in the crash, or if damages exceed $1,000, each driver must file an SR 1 with the DMV within 10 days, no matter who was at fault. The police report does not meet this requirement. California’s minimum liability insurance is $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for injuries to more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage.

Oakland’s 2024 High Injury Network found that just 8 percent of city streets are responsible for 60 percent of severe and fatal crashes, based on data from 2017 to 2021. In June 2024, The Oaklandside published injury and death counts for the 20 intersections on OakDOT’s high-injury list, using state collision data from 2017 to 2023.
