Car Accidents in Visalia, CA: Police Reports and Crash Data

Key crash statistics, high-risk roads, and accident report resources in Tulare County.

Last updated October 2026
Visalia is the Tulare County seat, a farm city of about 147,000 on the Kaweah River delta, 42 miles southeast of Fresno. State Route 99 runs past its west side between Fresno and Bakersfield, and State Route 198 crosses town as a freeway, carrying Hanford traffic in from the west and park visitors east toward Sequoia National Park. Mooney Boulevard, State Route 63 south of downtown, is the shopping street, running south past College of the Sequoias and Visalia Mall toward Tulare. Nearly 9,500 students use that campus, and people walking were hit in most of the city’s fatal crashes early this year.

Which road you were on matters, because city streets, the freeways and the county roads just past the city limit each belong to a different agency.

What to Do After a Crash on a Visalia Street

The Visalia Police Department’s Traffic Unit investigates crashes on city streets, Mooney Boulevard included. The California Highway Patrol’s Visalia Area office at 5025 West Noble Avenue covers State Routes 99 and 198 and more than 2,200 miles of unincorporated county roads, like the stretch of Avenue 344 where a hit-and-run was reported in August. The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office polices unincorporated Tulare County.

Visalia Police collision reports cost $10 at police headquarters, 303 South Johnson Street, using the Application for Release of Traffic Collision/Crime Report. They are also sold online through LexisNexis BuyCrash, which adds a convenience fee. Allow 10 business days after the crash, and note that VPD can only release reports its own officers wrote.

For a crash on 99, 198 or a county road, file a CHP 190 form with the Visalia Area office, in person or by mail, with a copy of your ID or a notarized signature. The fee is $10 for up to 25 pages. California also requires an SR-1 form sent to the DMV within 10 days of a crash that injured or killed anyone or did more than $1,000 in damage, whether or not police came.
