Cameron, NC (August 16, 2025) – A tragic head-on collision in Harnett County claimed the life of one driver and left two others injured Friday afternoon. The crash occurred around noon on Ponderosa Road and involved a 2023 Kia Soul and a 2025 Nissan pickup truck, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).
Investigators report that the Kia Soul, driven by 29-year-old Lemmuel Layne of Cameron, was traveling south when it crossed over the centerline into the northbound lane. The Nissan pickup attempted to avoid the crash by swerving off the right side of the road but was unable to prevent the head-on impact.
Layne, the sole occupant of the Kia, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials confirmed he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The two occupants of the pickup truck—both of whom have not been publicly identified—were transported to a nearby hospital. Their injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening, and both are expected to recover.
Troopers noted that while speed was not the primary cause of the crash, it was a contributing factor. No charges have been filed in connection with the incident as of this report.
Our thoughts are with the family of Lemmuel Layne and with the injured survivors as they recover from this devastating event.
Head-On Collisions and Fatalities in North Carolina
Head-on collisions like the one that occurred on Ponderosa Road are among the most severe and deadly types of roadway incidents. In rural areas such as Harnett County, two-lane roads without physical medians leave little room for error, especially when vehicles cross into oncoming traffic. Tragically, these crashes often result in fatalities, as the force of impact is typically concentrated at the front of both vehicles.
The decision to not wear a seatbelt, as in this case, can dramatically increase the likelihood of death or severe injury in a crash. According to state data, unrestrained drivers are several times more likely to suffer fatal injuries compared to those properly restrained.
For those injured in such crashes—whether or not they were at fault—the physical and emotional toll can be long-lasting. Hospitalizations, therapy, insurance challenges, and psychological trauma are common. Victims and their families should not hesitate to seek support, both medically and legally, to protect their well-being and understand their rights in the aftermath of a life-altering event.
