Carroll, IA (April 22, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash on Easter Sunday morning sent six people to the hospital, including two with suspected serious injuries, following a collision at the intersection of Grant Road and 210th Street on the southeast side of Carroll.
According to local authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 11:11 AM. A 2021 Kia Sportage, driven by 31-year-old Rachel Zeller of Carroll, was traveling southbound on Grant Road when she attempted to make a left-hand turn onto 210th Street. At that moment, her vehicle was struck by a northbound 2009 Jeep Patriot operated by 31-year-old Randy Johnson, also of Carroll.
Zeller and 25-year-old Morgan Dettman, a passenger in Johnson’s vehicle, were transported by ambulance to St. Anthony Regional Hospital with suspected serious injuries. Johnson and three child passengers were transported by private vehicle for treatment of minor injuries.
Following the crash, Zeller was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn and for operating a vehicle without current registration. Johnson received a citation for operating a vehicle without insurance.
We extend our thoughts to all those injured and wish them a full and swift recovery.
Failure to Yield and Intersection Safety in Rural Iowa
Crashes at rural intersections—like the one at Grant Road and 210th Street—are a persistent safety concern across Iowa. These roadways often lack traffic signals or protective features, relying instead on driver judgment and posted signage. Left-turn maneuvers, in particular, demand heightened caution, as they require drivers to correctly assess the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles.
In this case, the failure to yield the right-of-way by the southbound driver was identified as a contributing factor. Left-turn collisions are among the most common causes of crashes at rural junctions and often result in side-impact collisions, which can cause severe injuries, particularly to passengers.
Moreover, the presence of multiple children in one of the vehicles adds another layer of concern. Even when child occupants sustain only minor physical injuries, such events can be emotionally distressing and warrant careful follow-up.
This incident also sheds light on the broader importance of insurance and registration compliance. Driving without active insurance or registration not only puts drivers at financial and legal risk but can significantly complicate post-crash claims and liabilities.
For those injured, recovery may involve extensive medical care, therapy, and legal or insurance proceedings. Access to experienced, compassionate guidance is crucial for managing these challenges.
