Casey, IL (January 11, 2025) – An 80-year-old man tragically lost his life on Thursday when a fire broke out in his home on County Rd 2350E in Casey, Cumberland County. The fire was reported at approximately 1 p.m. and resulted in the complete destruction of the residence.
Michael Carlen, Chief of the Greenup Fire Protection District, stated that firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy flames originating from the west side of the home, particularly in the kitchen area. The intensity of the fire and extreme heat prevented crews from entering the structure, forcing them to battle the blaze from the outside. A partial collapse occurred, and the home was declared a total loss.
As firefighters worked through the rubble hours later, they discovered the body of the homeowner, identified as James Mullen. Jennifer Phipps, Deputy Coroner for Cumberland County, confirmed his identity and pronounced him dead at the scene. The cause of death has not been determined.
The origin of the fire is also unknown and is currently under investigation by the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. Firefighters from Casey and Toledo assisted the Greenup Fire Protection District at the scene, while the Neoga Fire Department provided coverage for Greenup’s fire station during the emergency.
