Cass Co, MO (September 19, 2025) – A tragic crash on northbound I-49 south of MO-2 claimed the life of a Harrisonville woman late Thursday morning. The collision occurred around 11:50 a.m. when traffic had slowed in the left lane. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a 2005 Kenworth T600 failed to stop and struck the rear of a 2001 Toyota 4Runner that was stationary in traffic. The force of the impact pushed the Toyota into the rear of a 2025 Kenworth W900L.
The Toyota sustained total damage, and its driver, a 56-year-old woman from Harrisonville, was fatally injured despite wearing her seat belt. She was pronounced deceased at the scene by a Harrisonville EMS paramedic at 12:00 p.m. The driver of the Kenworth T600, a 54-year-old man from Deepwater, was not reported as injured, but his vehicle was totaled and towed from the site. The Kenworth W900L, operated by a 51-year-old Independence man, had no significant damage but was also towed away.
Troopers C.J. Drum and A.J. Kempa of Troop A, along with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, led the investigation. Multiple agencies, including the Cass County Sheriff’s Department and Harrisonville Police, assisted at the scene.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this heartbreaking time.
Fatal Crashes in Missouri
The collision on I-49 highlights the devastating consequences of rear-end crashes on congested highways. When traffic slows or stops suddenly, large commercial vehicles like tractor-trailers require far more distance to stop. Failing to adjust speed or maintain proper following distance can have catastrophic outcomes, as seen in this tragedy where a life was lost despite the victim’s use of a seat belt.
Missouri traffic statistics show that multi-vehicle accidents involving large trucks are disproportionately deadly. The size and weight of commercial vehicles mean that impacts often result in severe or fatal injuries to occupants of smaller vehicles. According to Troop A, this was the 55th fatal crash and the 59th roadway fatality for the troop’s jurisdiction in 2025, underscoring the ongoing dangers on Missouri’s interstate system.
Beyond the immediate human toll, fatal highway crashes like this create extended closures, delays for emergency services, and ripple effects throughout the community. For family members and survivors, the aftermath brings not only grief but also financial and emotional challenges. These incidents serve as a critical reminder of the importance of vigilance, particularly when operating heavy vehicles in traffic congestion.
Local Accident Reports urges drivers across Missouri to remain alert and cautious on busy highways, especially near bottlenecks and congested zones. Truck drivers, in particular, must account for longer stopping distances and traffic slowdowns to help prevent tragedies.
