Cass County, MO (August 12, 2025) – Two people were injured on Sunday evening in a collision on northbound I-49 at the 154-mile marker after one vehicle hydroplaned. The crash occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. when a 2014 BMW 320i, driven by a 47-year-old man from Topeka, KS, lost traction on the wet roadway and struck a 2024 Genesis GV70 driven by a 68-year-old woman from Sheridan, AR. Both vehicles left the roadway to the right before coming to a stop.
The BMW’s driver and the Genesis’ driver each sustained minor injuries and were transported to Cass Regional Medical Center for treatment. The BMW had minor damage and was towed by GT Tow, while the Genesis sustained moderate damage and was removed by J’s Southland Tow.
Our thoughts are with both injured drivers, and we wish them a full recovery.
Weather-Related Crashes in Missouri
Wet road conditions can greatly increase the likelihood of hydroplaning, particularly at highway speeds. When tires lose contact with the pavement due to standing water, drivers can quickly lose steering control. In Sunday’s crash on I-49, the Missouri State Highway Patrol determined that the BMW hydroplaned and struck the Genesis, forcing both vehicles off the road.
According to the Missouri Department of Transportation, weather-related crashes account for thousands of collisions each year, with rain being the most common contributing factor. Hydroplaning incidents often occur during or shortly after heavy rainfall when water pools in certain sections of the roadway. Drivers can reduce the risk by lowering speeds, avoiding sudden steering movements, and ensuring their tires have adequate tread depth.
