Golf Cart and Off-Road Vehicle Crashes in Michigan
Crashes involving golf carts and off-road vehicles, like the incident in Cassopolis, are becoming more common in semi-rural communities where these vehicles are used for local travel. While often viewed as recreational or utility vehicles, golf carts are vulnerable in roadway collisions, particularly when involved with larger vehicles like pickup trucks.
According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, off-road and low-speed vehicle crashes often lead to serious injuries due to limited protection and lack of traditional safety features like seat belts and airbags. Youth drivers may face added risks due to inexperience and a greater likelihood of misjudging turning gaps or speed.
In Saturday’s crash, the intersection of Shultz Ct and Shore Acres Rd served as the site of the impact, emphasizing the need for caution when entering or crossing main roads in recreational vehicles. These crashes can have lasting consequences for young drivers and their families.
To help prevent similar incidents, Michigan drivers are reminded to obey local traffic rules for non-standard vehicles, ensure all drivers are properly supervised, and avoid public roads when not legally permitted.
