Cayuga County, NY (August 10, 2025) – A tragic crash involving a tractor-trailer and a passenger vehicle occurred on Thursday afternoon on I-90 eastbound in the town of Brutus, resulting in the death of the truck driver and serious injuries to the occupants of the passenger vehicle.
At approximately 4:57 p.m., State Police responded to the scene of the collision, which involved a tractor-trailer and a 2022 Honda. Investigators determined that Mark S. Shidler, 50, of Applecreek, OH, was driving the tractor-trailer in the westbound passing lane when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered through the median and guardrail, crossing into the eastbound lanes. The tractor-trailer struck the Honda, driven by John S. Roosa, 24, of Syracuse, and his passenger, Ashley G. Fay, 22, also from Syracuse.
Following the impact, the Honda rolled several times before coming to a stop, trapping both Roosa and Fay inside the vehicle. Firefighters and EMS personnel responded quickly to extricate the victims from the wreckage. Both Roosa and Fay were transported to Upstate Hospital in Syracuse for treatment. Roosa remains in stable but critical condition, while Fay was treated and later released.
Unfortunately, Shidler, the driver of the tractor-trailer, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Eastbound traffic on I-90 was delayed for approximately three hours, with backups stretching 5.1 miles as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage and conduct their investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by State Police.
