Centerville, UT (June 12, 2025) – A Utah Transit Authority (UTA) bus traveling on Interstate 15 struck a car at high speed following a multi-vehicle crash that unfolded just before 9:00 a.m. near 2100 North in Centerville. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported despite the violent nature of the impact.
Video footage from the UTA bus shows the southbound vehicle approaching the scene moments after a two-car crash occurred in adjacent lanes. One of the involved vehicles was knocked into the express lane and directly into the path of the oncoming bus. With no time to react, the UTA bus struck the car head-on at approximately 70 miles per hour.
In total, five vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction collision, including the bus. The incident occurred during the bus’s first scheduled stop of the day, and no passengers were aboard at the time. The bus driver escaped the crash without injury, while three other motorists sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene or shortly afterward.
UTA and local law enforcement are continuing their investigation to determine how the sequence of collisions unfolded and whether driver behavior or road conditions contributed to the incident.
We are thankful that this high-speed crash resulted in only minor injuries and wish all those involved a smooth and complete recovery. Our thoughts are with those affected by this accident.
Highway Chain-Reaction Crashes in Utah
Incidents like the one that occurred on southbound I-15 near 2100 North in Centerville demonstrate the unique risks presented by chain-reaction collisions on high-speed roadways. When even a minor crash occurs in a main travel lane, it can quickly create a cascading effect—especially when surrounding drivers have little room or time to avoid secondary impacts.
In this case, the vehicle initially struck in a two-car crash was sent into the express lane, where it collided head-on with a UTA bus moving at freeway speeds. The outcome could have been far worse had passengers been on board the bus or had the angle of impact been more direct.
Chain-reaction crashes on Utah highways are often intensified by limited visibility, high speeds, and the close following distances that are common during peak traffic hours. While express lanes are designed to improve traffic flow, they offer little margin for error when vehicles from adjacent lanes are pushed into them unexpectedly.
The fact that only minor injuries were reported in this incident is a testament to the safety designs of modern vehicles and the rapid response from emergency services. Nonetheless, even minor injuries should be fully evaluated, as the symptoms of whiplash, concussions, and soft tissue damage may not appear immediately after a crash.
For victims of multi-vehicle accidents involving public transportation or commercial entities like UTA, it’s important to understand your rights and how to navigate the aftermath. Determining liability can be complex when several parties and vehicles are involved.
