Chicago, IL (September 21, 2025) – A CTA bus collided with a residential building in the Jefferson Park neighborhood late Saturday night after being struck by a hit-and-run driver. The crash unfolded just before 11:00 p.m. on September 20, in the 5500 block of N Central Ave.
Authorities say a black sedan, traveling eastbound on Catalpa Ave, failed to stop at a stop sign and struck the driver’s side of the bus. The impact caused the 46-year-old bus driver to lose control of the vehicle, which then hit a parked car, plowed through a fence, and ultimately slammed into the side of a home.
The driver of the bus suffered a head laceration and was transported to a local hospital in fair condition.
An active investigation is ongoing.
We extend our thoughts to the injured bus driver and the displaced residents during this difficult time.
Bus Accidents and Residential Collisions in Illinois
Incidents like the CTA bus crash in Jefferson Park are stark reminders of how quickly urban traffic violations can escalate into destructive events. What began as a failure to stop at a residential intersection ended with not only an injury but also families displaced and property severely damaged.
CTA vehicles, operating across one of the busiest transit systems in the country, travel daily through densely populated neighborhoods where pedestrian and residential exposure is high. While bus drivers are trained to handle unexpected road situations, hit-and-run collisions—especially at night—can leave little time to react safely.
The structure involved in this crash now requires safety inspections, potential rebuilding, and temporary shelter for its occupants. Meanwhile, the bus driver’s injuries, though not life-threatening, may still involve a period of recovery, medical bills, and time away from work.
In cases like these, locating the at-fault driver becomes a top priority for law enforcement, both for accountability and for ensuring compensation avenues remain available to the injured and affected.
