Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accidents in Illinois
Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods like the Lower West Side often encourage a mix of transportation methods, including cycling. Unfortunately, when accidents occur—especially those involving vulnerable road users like cyclists—the consequences can be devastating. Saturday’s crash on W 21st St is another reminder of the dangers bicyclists face, particularly when drivers fail to remain at the scene.
Hit-and-run incidents are among the most troubling types of crashes. Not only do they result in injury, but they also delay critical assistance to victims. In cases like this, where the victim was left in critical condition, those lost minutes can be life-altering.
Bicycle-related collisions often stem from driver inattention, failure to yield, or unsafe passing. While Chicago has made efforts to improve bike infrastructure, crashes continue to happen—especially in mixed-use corridors where high-speed vehicles share space with non-motorized traffic.
Victims of hit-and-run crashes frequently face added legal and emotional burdens due to the lack of accountability. For those impacted, it’s essential to understand the steps to take following such incidents, including gathering available evidence, pursuing uninsured motorist coverage, and seeking proper legal guidance.
