Pedestrian Strikes on Illinois Highways
Highways like the Dan Ryan Expressway pose significant risks for pedestrians, especially when individuals exit vehicles after a crash. Incidents involving stopped motorists and secondary impacts are not uncommon in high-speed traffic environments. According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, dozens of fatal pedestrian strikes occur annually on state highways, with many happening after an initial crash or breakdown.
This tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the dangers present when exiting a vehicle on a busy expressway. Despite the instinct to assess damage or seek help, staying inside the vehicle and calling emergency services is often the safest option, especially in fast-moving traffic zones.
Loved ones left behind by fatal pedestrian crashes often face more than grief—they may also confront financial hardships, medical expenses, and legal questions surrounding liability. When such incidents involve hit-and-run or chain reactions, navigating these challenges becomes even more complex.
Authorities urge drivers to remain cautious and aware of disabled vehicles on roadways. If you witness or are involved in a highway crash, use hazard lights, call 911 immediately, and avoid standing outside the vehicle if at all possible.
