Claremont, CA (June 25, 2025) – A deadly collision on the San Bernardino Freeway early Tuesday morning claimed the life of one driver following a violent rear-end crash involving a fire truck, the California Highway Patrol confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:37 a.m. on the westbound side of Interstate 10 near Mills Ave. According to CHP reports, a Toyota Tundra traveling along the freeway struck the rear of a parked or slow-moving fire truck under circumstances that remain under investigation.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but tragically, the driver of the Toyota Tundra was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
No other injuries were reported, and officials have not disclosed whether the fire truck was responding to an earlier incident at the time of the crash.
CHP investigators remained on scene for several hours to document evidence and determine the sequence of events that led to the fatal impact. Traffic along the westbound lanes was temporarily impacted during the response.
We extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s loved ones during this difficult time.
Fatal Accidents in California
Tragic incidents like the fatal crash on I-10 in Claremont serve as stark reminders of the risks drivers face, especially during early-morning hours when visibility, driver fatigue, and roadway conditions can all factor into serious accidents. In this case, a rear-end collision with a fire truck tragically ended one person’s life.
Rear-end collisions involving emergency vehicles are particularly dangerous. Fire trucks, often stopped or operating at reduced speeds while responding to incidents, can be difficult to anticipate—especially for drivers who are tired, distracted, or navigating pre-dawn traffic conditions. The massive size and weight difference between a passenger truck and a fire engine also greatly increases the potential for deadly outcomes.
Southern California freeways like I-10 see steady traffic throughout all hours, making safety precautions all the more essential. It’s critical that drivers remain alert, maintain safe following distances, and slow down when approaching flashing lights or emergency responders on the roadside.
When fatal collisions occur, families are often left to deal with grief, unanswered questions, and the burden of managing medical bills, funeral costs, and investigations. Support from local resources, including grief counselors, legal advocates, and crash scene analysts, can help loved ones begin the process of understanding what happened and planning a path forward.
The investigation into Tuesday’s crash is ongoing. Officials are urging any witnesses or individuals with dashcam footage to contact local CHP offices.
