Claxton, GA (September 5, 2025) – A head-on collision between a school bus and a Nissan Titan pickup truck in Evans County left more than 30 people injured Thursday afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol and Evans County Schools.
The crash happened around 3:51 p.m. on State Route 73 near Pine St. Investigators say the northbound school bus drifted into the southbound lane after the driver became distracted while attending to a student who had left their seat and moved into the doorway. The bus then struck a Nissan Titan head-on, leaving both vehicles disabled in the roadway.
The driver of the Nissan Titan sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital. Evans County Schools confirmed in a Friday update that approximately 30 students aboard the bus were treated at Evans Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders worked extensively at the scene, transporting multiple victims and securing the area for investigators. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the crash with full cooperation from Evans County Schools.
Our thoughts are with the injured students, the driver of the pickup truck, and their families as they recover from this frightening incident.
School Bus Accidents in Georgia
The crash in Claxton highlights the unique risks associated with school bus travel, even though such vehicles are generally considered one of the safest forms of transportation for children. When distractions occur inside the bus, drivers may lose critical focus on the roadway—leading to dangerous outcomes, as seen in Thursday’s head-on collision.
In Georgia, school bus crashes draw heightened concern because they often involve multiple young passengers. Even when injuries are not life-threatening, the trauma can affect students physically and emotionally. The involvement of a large pickup truck, combined with the size of the bus, illustrates how severe such accidents can be for all parties.
For families, the aftermath of a bus accident is overwhelming. Parents are confronted with immediate fear for their children’s safety, medical evaluations, and the stress of long-term recovery. Communities also feel the impact, as school systems must navigate safety reviews and renewed focus on training and policies.
