Clay City, KY (May 14, 2025) – A tragic collision on Main Street in Clay City has claimed the life of a 42-year-old man and led to multiple criminal charges against a Jeffersonville woman. Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 8 in Morehead confirmed it was contacted by Powell County dispatch to investigate the fatal crash, which occurred near the Dairy Queen on Main Street.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a white Buick Encore, driven by Alyson Marie Kay Martin, 25, was traveling through Clay City when it struck Ross P. Hicks, a pedestrian from Mt. Sterling. Mr. Hicks was pronounced dead at the scene by Powell County Coroner Megan Wells Curtis.
Following the incident, Martin fled the scene, but she was later located and arrested. She now faces several serious charges, including:
- Vehicular homicide while under the influence of alcohol
- Leaving the scene of an accident/failure to render aid
- Tampering with physical evidence
- Operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol (1st offense)
Martin was transported and booked into the Montgomery County Regional Jail.
KSP is reconstructing the crash and continuing its investigation, led by Trooper Leoncio Leal. The agency is being assisted by the Clay City Police Department, Powell County Fire and EMS, Powell County Sheriff’s Department, Powell County Coroner, Mt. Sterling Police Department, and other KSP personnel.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ross P. Hicks during this incredibly difficult time.
DUI Fatalities and Pedestrian Safety in Kentucky
Fatal pedestrian incidents involving impaired drivers are among the most devastating—and preventable—types of crashes on Kentucky roads. When drivers under the influence take the wheel, their impaired judgment and delayed reaction times significantly increase the risk of tragedy, especially in areas like Main Street where pedestrian activity is common.
Leaving the scene of a crash, particularly when someone has been seriously hurt or killed, compounds the harm and legal consequences. Kentucky law requires drivers to remain at the scene and render aid if possible—a responsibility that becomes even more critical when human life is at stake.
For families affected by fatal crashes, the aftermath is overwhelming. In addition to the emotional grief, loved ones often face burial costs, legal proceedings, and complex insurance matters. Ensuring the responsible party is held accountable is not just a legal process—it’s an essential part of seeking justice and closure.
If you or someone you love has been impacted by a pedestrian crash, especially one involving DUI or hit-and-run, it’s vital to connect with experienced professionals who can help guide you through the recovery and legal process.
