Clay Co, MO (September 24, 2025) – A chain-reaction crash involving three vehicles left one person injured Tuesday morning in Clay County. The accident took place at approximately 9:30 a.m. on I-35 southbound near the 10-mile marker after traffic slowed due to an earlier crash blocking the left lane.
According to officials, a 2013 Chevrolet slowed with traffic when it was struck from behind by a 2017 Toyota. A 2025 Ford F-150 traveling behind then collided with the rear of the Toyota, forcing it into the Chevrolet a second time. The Chevrolet sustained moderate damage and had to be removed by Integrity Towing, while the Toyota was towed by Lucky’s due to significant damage. The Ford sustained minor damage and was able to be driven from the scene.
The driver of the Chevrolet, a 23-year-old man from Akron, IA, suffered injuries and was transported by Kansas City Fire EMS to North Kansas City Hospital. The drivers of the Ford and Toyota were not reported injured.
Traffic along the southbound lanes of I-35 was heavily affected while emergency crews and investigators worked to clear the wreckage. The Missouri State Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver as he recovers.
Multi-Vehicle Accidents in Missouri
This morning’s crash near Kearney illustrates how quickly traffic slowdowns can lead to secondary collisions on Missouri highways. The chain of impacts on I-35 left one young driver injured and caused significant damage to two vehicles, disrupting traffic for commuters in the area.
Multi-vehicle crashes often occur when drivers cannot stop in time during congestion, as each collision creates a ripple effect for vehicles following behind. Rear-end collisions like those in today’s incident are among the most common types reported on busy highways. According to state crash records, they frequently result in injuries and costly property damage, even when speeds are reduced due to slowed traffic.
Motorists can help reduce these risks by allowing greater following distances, anticipating potential slowdowns, and remaining alert to changing road conditions. Commercial corridors such as I-35, where traffic is heavy and sudden stops are frequent, demand particular vigilance.
