Clay County, MO (September 1, 2025) – A woman was tragically killed late Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck along MO-291 just north of Middlebrook Drive in Clay County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at approximately 11:12 p.m. when the driver of a southbound 2006 Ford F-250 encountered a sudden swerve from an unknown vehicle ahead. In the process of reacting, the driver noticed a pedestrian in the roadway and attempted to avoid her. Despite his efforts, the truck struck the woman.
The victim, identified as a 48-year-old woman from Excelsior Springs, was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedic Cameron Conrad at 11:19 p.m. Authorities reported that the woman was exempt from using a safety device, as she was on foot at the time of the incident.
The driver of the Ford, a 22-year-old man from Holt, MO, was not injured in the crash. His vehicle sustained extensive damage and was towed from the scene by Integrity Tow. No other vehicles remained at the scene, and the unknown swerving vehicle was not located.
Troop A’s Major Crash Investigation Unit (MCIU), alongside local law enforcement and multiple troopers, responded to the scene and are continuing the investigation. The victim’s next of kin have been notified.
This marks the 48th fatal crash and 52nd traffic fatality for Troop A in 2025. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this incredibly difficult time.
Pedestrian Fatalities in Missouri
The fatal pedestrian crash on MO-291 serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the vulnerability of people on foot, particularly during nighttime hours on high-speed roads. Rural and suburban highways like this stretch of MO-291 are often poorly lit, making it difficult for drivers to detect pedestrians until it’s too late.
This incident also highlights the dangers posed by unpredictable driver behavior. According to authorities, the initial swerve by an unknown vehicle caused a chain reaction that ended with a woman losing her life—showing how even brief moments of erratic driving can have devastating consequences.
Pedestrian deaths are on the rise nationwide, and Missouri has not been immune to this trend. The lack of sidewalks, inadequate lighting, and limited pedestrian infrastructure along state routes contribute to the heightened risk. Many victims, like the woman in this case, are struck despite drivers attempting to avoid them.
For families affected by fatal pedestrian crashes, the aftermath can be overwhelming. From grief and funeral planning to seeking answers and accountability, the emotional and legal challenges are substantial.
Ongoing investigations in cases like this are critical not only for determining what happened, but also for identifying potential improvements in roadway safety. Whether it’s better signage, lighting, or driver awareness initiatives, every life lost represents a call for action.
