Clearwater, FL (September 24, 2025) – A 40-year-old woman riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon following a collision on State Road 580 in Clearwater. The crash occurred around 12:30 PM, just east of Summerdale Dr, according to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
Authorities say a 95-year-old Clearwater woman driving a Honda Accord had been traveling east on SR-580 and had stopped in the center turn lane. As the motorcyclist approached the area while heading westbound, the Honda reportedly made a left turn directly into the motorcycle’s path. The motorcyclist was unable to avoid the vehicle and collided with it.
Emergency medical personnel responded quickly to the scene and transported the injured rider to a nearby hospital. She sustained serious injuries, though her current condition has not been released. The driver of the Honda Accord was not injured in the crash.
FHP continues to investigate the incident, including whether right-of-way violations or visibility factors contributed to the collision. No charges or citations have been announced at this time.
Our thoughts are with the injured motorcyclist, and we hope for her full and speedy recovery.
Left-Turn Motorcycle Collisions in Florida
Motorcycle crashes involving left-turning vehicles are among the most common—and most dangerous—types of traffic collisions in Florida. As seen in Tuesday’s incident on SR-580, these crashes often occur when a driver fails to accurately judge the distance or speed of an oncoming motorcycle before making a turn across traffic.
Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles, drivers frequently miscalculate the amount of time they have to safely complete a turn. The result is often a high-impact collision that leaves the motorcyclist with severe injuries. Unlike car occupants, motorcyclists are exposed to the full force of impact, often resulting in trauma to the head, spine, and limbs.
Clearwater’s roadways, like SR-580, see a steady mix of local and through traffic, making center turn lanes a convenience—but also a potential hazard. Left-turn accidents on these roads are not uncommon, especially in mid-day conditions when visibility is high but reaction times can be unpredictable.
For injured riders, the road to recovery can involve extensive medical care, physical therapy, and months of rehabilitation. Medical bills and lost income can add up quickly, especially if the injuries are severe or long-term. It’s critical that motorcyclists injured in crashes get the medical treatment and legal support they need as soon as possible.
If you or someone you love has been hurt in a motorcycle accident caused by another driver’s actions, understanding your options can make a major difference in your recovery process.
