Cleburne County, AL (July 7, 2025) – A tragic three-vehicle collision on Sunday morning claimed the life of a South Carolina woman and left another person injured along a stretch of I-20 near Heflin, according to authorities.
The fatal crash took place at approximately 7:23 a.m. on July 6. Investigators with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) reported that 74-year-old Elizabeth E. Melton of Summerville, SC, was driving when her vehicle struck another car. Following the initial impact, her vehicle was hit by an oncoming tractor-trailer. Melton was pronounced dead at the scene as a result of her injuries.
Also injured in the crash was 62-year-old David Clark of Carrollton, GA, who was a passenger in Melton’s car. He was transported to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton for medical treatment. No updates have been released regarding his current condition.
The collision occurred along a rural but heavily trafficked portion of I-20 in Cleburne County, a major corridor connecting Alabama and Georgia. Emergency crews remained on site for an extended period, working to clear debris, assess vehicle damage, and reroute traffic around the scene.
ALEA troopers are continuing to investigate the sequence of events that led to the deadly incident. Additional details may be released as the inquiry develops.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Elizabeth Melton, and we extend heartfelt wishes for David Clark’s recovery.
Fatal Interstate Collisions in Alabama
The loss of life in Sunday’s multi-vehicle crash on I-20 is a sobering reminder of the dangers that exist on Alabama’s interstate highways—especially along long-distance corridors like the stretch near Heflin. These roadways, which carry heavy truck traffic and high-speed commuters, are often the setting for catastrophic collisions when visibility is limited or reaction time is compromised.
Data from the Alabama Department of Transportation indicates that multi-vehicle accidents involving tractor-trailers are among the most deadly crash types in the state. Common contributing factors include speed, merging difficulties, and sudden braking—especially in early morning hours when traffic patterns can be unpredictable.
Victims and their families often face immense emotional and logistical challenges after such tragedies. In cases involving fatal crashes, questions around liability, insurance, and long-term care for survivors can quickly become overwhelming. That’s why it is critical for those affected to seek trusted guidance and support as they navigate the days and weeks ahead.
Elizabeth Melton’s death represents more than a statistic—it is a personal and community loss that will be felt by those who knew her in Summerville and beyond. Meanwhile, survivors like David Clark must now focus on healing and securing the care they need to recover.
If you or someone you know has been impacted by a serious or fatal collision on Alabama roadways, you are not alone.
