Columbia County, OR (July 28, 2025) – A serious crash on Highway 30 on Wednesday afternoon has resulted in the death of a 90-year-old driver and injuries to two others, according to the Oregon State Police. The collision occurred when a Chevrolet Cruze traveling eastbound veered into the westbound lane for reasons still under investigation.
Authorities identified the deceased driver as Gary Ronald Thomas of St. Helens. Preliminary reports indicate that Thomas was driving east on Hwy 30 when his vehicle unexpectedly crossed the centerline, striking a westbound Saturn SL1 before also colliding with a Toyota Camry.
Emergency crews responded quickly to the scene and coordinated with Life Flight to transport Thomas to a regional hospital with serious injuries. Tragically, he later succumbed to his injuries.
The driver of the Saturn also sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by ambulance. The operator of the Toyota, who suffered minor injuries, sought treatment via private transportation.
The crash led to a full closure of Hwy 30 for approximately two hours as investigators conducted a detailed on-site analysis. Oregon State Police continue to examine roadway conditions, vehicle data, and any possible medical or mechanical issues that may have contributed to the incident.
Our thoughts are with the families and all those affected by this heartbreaking crash.
Dangers of Head-On and Lane-Deviation Crashes in Oregon
Highway 30 in Columbia County is a major commuter and freight route that links rural and suburban communities to the greater Portland metro area. While generally safe under normal conditions, it presents serious risks when a vehicle crosses into oncoming lanes, particularly at highway speeds. Wednesday’s tragic collision highlights how a brief moment of lane deviation can result in devastating outcomes.
Head-on collisions, like the one involving Gary Ronald Thomas, are among the deadliest crash types due to the combined impact forces. Although the cause in this case remains unknown, lane departures may stem from medical episodes, fatigue, distraction, or mechanical failure. The narrow shoulders and limited barriers along portions of Hwy 30 increase the danger when a vehicle veers off course.
Emergency crews and hospital staff play a vital role in minimizing the loss of life in such crashes. However, as seen in this incident, even advanced care and air transport may not be enough to prevent fatal outcomes in severe collisions.
Families affected by fatal crashes must often navigate both grief and an overwhelming list of legal and logistical matters. In addition to emotional trauma, they may face unexpected financial burdens, funeral costs, and the challenge of managing insurance claims or investigations.
