Constantine, MI (August 8, 2025) – A deadly two-vehicle collision occurred Thursday evening in St. Joseph County, claiming the life of an elderly driver after an SUV and a recreational vehicle collided at the intersection of US-131 and Youngs Prairie Rd.
The crash happened around 8:00 p.m., according to Michigan State Police. Authorities say an SUV traveling eastbound on Youngs Prairie Rd failed to yield while turning left onto US-131 and was struck by a southbound RV.
The driver of the SUV, an 86-year-old Constantine man, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. Troopers noted that it is unclear whether he was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The RV was being driven by a 48-year-old man from Caledonia, who was accompanied by passengers. All occupants of the RV sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. According to officials, all were wearing seat belts at the time of impact.
US-131 was closed temporarily while investigators documented the scene and cleared the roadway. No signs of alcohol or drug involvement were found, and law enforcement continues to evaluate contributing factors including visibility and timing at the intersection.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the deceased driver. We also extend our thoughts to the others involved and hope for their full recovery.
Fatal Intersection Accidents in Michigan
Thursday night’s crash near Constantine emphasizes the ongoing risks posed by intersections along rural highways such as US-131. With high speeds and limited lighting, collisions in these areas can quickly become fatal—especially when right-of-way errors occur.
Michigan’s rural intersections, like the one at Youngs Prairie Rd, often lack the visual cues and technological infrastructure found in urban settings. When drivers misjudge oncoming traffic or attempt unsafe turns, the consequences can be devastating. In this case, the SUV driver’s failure to yield tragically resulted in a life lost.
Statistics from the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning show that failure-to-yield is one of the leading causes of intersection fatalities in the state. Elderly drivers are also disproportionately affected in these types of incidents due to slower reaction times and decreased visibility during low-light conditions.
While the occupants of the RV sustained only minor injuries—likely aided by proper seat belt use—these incidents often leave lasting emotional and physical trauma. Surviving victims and families must deal with the aftermath, including medical recovery, vehicle damage, and insurance complications.
Understanding your rights and responsibilities after a crash is critical, especially in cases involving fatalities. Families may face overwhelming decisions and deserve access to compassionate support, clear information, and trustworthy resources to navigate the days ahead.
