Conway, SC (August 21, 2025) – A crash involving four vehicles, including a dump truck, claimed two lives Wednesday afternoon on Highway 22. The collision occurred around 4:30 p.m. on the bridge crossing the Waccamaw River, not far from Highway 905.
According to South Carolina state troopers, the wreck began when a dump truck struck the rear of a Chevrolet SUV that was stopped in traffic. The force of the impact caused the SUV to collide with a Jeep and a GMC pickup truck that were also stopped on the bridge. The dump truck and SUV caught fire, while the Jeep was pushed off the bridge and fell into the river.
Tragically, the drivers of the SUV, identified as Flora Beltran-Gomez, and the Jeep, identified as Earl Burnette, died from their injuries. The driver of the GMC pickup was transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the dump truck was not injured.
Videos taken at the scene showed heavy black smoke and flames rising from the vehicles involved in the fiery wreck. Crews with the South Carolina Department of Transportation were called in to inspect the bridge following the crash.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the incident. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and with all who were affected by this tragedy.
Risks of Dump Truck Collisions on South Carolina Highways
Large commercial vehicles such as dump trucks pose significant hazards when involved in traffic crashes. Their size and weight often result in catastrophic outcomes, particularly when other vehicles are stopped in congested conditions. Highway corridors like SC-22, which carry a mix of commuter and commercial traffic, are especially vulnerable to multi-vehicle chain-reaction crashes.
According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, crashes involving heavy trucks frequently result in fatalities or severe injuries, with rear-end impacts among the most common causes. Factors such as driver fatigue, distracted driving, and inadequate stopping distances contribute heavily to these collisions.
Families impacted by deadly crashes often face immense emotional and financial challenges. Support resources, proper investigations, and legal guidance can be critical for those seeking justice and recovery after such devastating events.
