Corpus Christi, TX (August 23, 2025) – A deadly head-on collision occurred Thursday afternoon on FM 738 north of Orange Grove, claiming the life of a 71-year-old Sandia man and injuring another individual. The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the crash took place around 4:15 p.m.
According to officials, Ramon Reyes Estrada was driving a 1998 Chevrolet pickup southbound on FM 738 when he attempted to pass a vehicle that was preparing to make a right turn. While maneuvering into the northbound lane, his vehicle collided with an oncoming 2002 Ford F-150 driven by 66-year-old Humberto Ramon, also of Sandia.
Despite an apparent effort by Estrada to avoid the crash, the Ford pickup struck his vehicle on the passenger side. First responders, including medics and local authorities, were quick to the scene and transported Estrada to Christus Spohn Hospital in Alice. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 5:00 p.m. Justice of the Peace Judge Richard DeLeon pronounced him deceased.
Ramon was also hospitalized for his injuries, though his condition has not yet been made public.
Authorities from the Alice Highway Patrol Office are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine the factors involved.

Head-On Collisions and Rural Road Risks in Texas
Head-on crashes like the one reported on FM 738 are among the most deadly types of motor vehicle accidents. They often occur at high speeds, particularly on rural highways where passing zones may be misjudged or not clearly marked. Roads such as FM 738, which connect smaller communities across South Texas, frequently lack dividers or barriers, increasing the risk for oncoming traffic conflicts.
Data from the Texas Department of Transportation shows that rural roadways account for a significant share of the state’s fatal crashes. Driver decisions, such as attempting to pass slower vehicles without adequate visibility, remain a leading factor in these tragedies.
These accidents often result in severe trauma due to the combined impact speeds, and the injuries can be life-altering or fatal. Survivors may face lengthy recoveries, while families of deceased victims must navigate the grief and aftermath of sudden loss.
It’s essential for drivers on rural highways to exercise caution, especially when overtaking other vehicles. Even small miscalculations can result in catastrophic outcomes.
