Coryell County, TX (September 25, 2025) – A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred late Wednesday morning on Highway 36 just west of Long Bridge in Coryell County, resulting in the death of one driver and injuries to another.
According to Texas Department of Public Safety, the collision took place around 10:30 a.m. when 18-year-old Romi Bomar was driving a 2014 Jeep eastbound on Hwy 36. While navigating a curve on a wet roadway, Bomar reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic. The Jeep collided with a westbound 2012 Ford F-350 driven by a 22-year-old woman from Gatesville.
Emergency crews responded quickly and transported both drivers to Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Temple. Tragically, Bomar succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. The other driver remains hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
Troopers with DPS are continuing to examine the factors contributing to the crash, including weather and roadway conditions.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the young driver who lost her life, and we extend our thoughts to the injured driver during her recovery.
Fatal Crashes on Rural Texas Highways
The tragic crash on Hwy 36 highlights a recurring risk faced by drivers in rural areas of Texas, where road conditions can change quickly—especially during periods of wet weather. Curves, limited visibility, and narrow shoulders often increase the danger along these stretches of highway, and even a momentary loss of control can have devastating consequences.
Coryell County, like many rural regions in the state, sees a mix of commercial and personal vehicle traffic on roads that may not be designed for high-speed travel or inclement weather. In this case, wet pavement likely played a role in the collision, as confirmed by DPS investigators.
Accidents on rural roads can also delay response times and access to trauma care. Fortunately, both drivers in this incident were transported to a major regional hospital, but the outcome for one family was still heartbreaking. The reality is that young drivers, in particular, face elevated risks when navigating rural roadways—especially in challenging conditions.
This crash reinforces the need for greater awareness and preparation when driving outside city limits. That includes reducing speed in poor weather, keeping a firm grip on the wheel through curves, and always wearing a seatbelt. When tragedies like this occur, they send shockwaves through small communities and remind us all of the importance of safe driving habits.
For families impacted by fatal crashes, navigating grief and recovery is overwhelming. Understanding your rights and accessing available resources is critical in these moments.
