Winning Trials since 1979

Crawfordville, FL (February 6, 2025) – A tragic collision on US 319 in Crawfordville claimed the life of a motorcyclist from Tallahassee on Wednesday night, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The crash occurred just before 9:30 PM near the intersection of US 319 and Rainbow Drive.

FHP reports that a sedan driven by a 17-year-old was traveling southbound on US 319 when it attempted to make a left turn onto Rainbow Drive. As the sedan turned, it crossed into the path of a northbound motorcycle operated by the Tallahassee man. The motorcycle collided with the right rear side of the sedan, causing the motorcyclist to be ejected from his bike and land approximately 20 feet from the point of impact.

Following the collision, the motorcycle continued to rotate behind the sedan before coming to a rest, while the sedan also came to a stop shortly after the impact. Emergency responders transported the motorcyclist to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity has not been publicly released, but authorities confirmed that his next of kin has been notified.

The 17-year-old driver of the sedan was unharmed in the crash. US 319 was closed for several hours as investigators examined the scene and worked to determine the exact cause of the accident. The investigation remains ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased motorcyclist during this difficult time.

Motorcycle Accidents in Florida

Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of motorcycle accidents and fatalities. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV), thousands of motorcycle crashes occur each year, many resulting in serious injuries or deaths. Crashes like the recent one on US 319 in Crawfordville underscore the dangers motorcyclists face on the road, especially when drivers fail to yield or misjudge the speed of oncoming bikes.

Intersections are particularly hazardous for motorcyclists, as left-turn collisions are among the most common types of accidents involving motorcycles. In this case, the sedan’s left turn into the path of the oncoming motorcycle led to a fatal outcome. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than other vehicles, which often contributes to these types of collisions. Drivers must exercise caution and double-check for approaching motorcycles before making turns, particularly in busy or poorly lit areas.

Motorcyclists are inherently more vulnerable in accidents due to the lack of protective barriers. Even with helmets and other safety gear, the risk of severe injury or death remains high in high-speed impacts. In addition to the physical dangers, families affected by fatal motorcycle crashes often face emotional trauma and financial burdens related to medical expenses, funeral costs, and loss of income.

Florida law allows the families of victims to pursue compensation for wrongful death in cases where another driver’s negligence contributed to the accident. Consulting with legal professionals experienced in motorcycle accident cases can provide valuable guidance on navigating the legal process and securing the support needed during recovery.

To help prevent motorcycle accidents, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends the following safety measures:

  • For drivers: Always check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles, especially when turning or changing lanes. Yield to motorcyclists when required, and never assume they are traveling at a slower speed due to their smaller size.
  • For motorcyclists: Wear DOT-approved helmets, use reflective gear for increased visibility, and follow all traffic laws. Maintaining a safe speed and being aware of surrounding vehicles can reduce the risk of accidents.
