Cumberland, MD (January 17, 2026) – A serious wrong-way accident on I-68 near the 41 mile marker in Cumberland early on January 16 left two individuals injured, including a taxi driver who suffered life-threatening injuries.
According to Maryland State Police, the collision occurred at approximately 12:38 a.m. when a Kia Soul, driven by a white female, was traveling in the wrong direction on I-68 in Allegany County. The vehicle struck a Chevrolet Impala operated as a Queen City Taxi, driven by a white male.
Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported both drivers to UPMC Western Maryland for treatment. The male driver of the taxi sustained critical injuries, while the female driver was also hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.
Preliminary reports suggest that alcohol may have contributed to the crash. The impact led to the temporary closure of I-68 for several hours as investigators worked at the scene.
