Davis, CA (August 27, 2025) – A motorcyclist was killed early Tuesday morning in a collision involving at least two vehicles and a suspected hit-and-run driver on the eastbound side of the I-80 Freeway near the Mace Boulevard on-ramp, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred around 4:48 a.m. and involved a motorcycle, another passenger vehicle, and a third vehicle believed to be a dump truck. Preliminary reports indicate that the dump truck may have played a critical role in the crash but fled the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Emergency responders were dispatched immediately and located the motorcyclist down on the roadway. Despite life-saving efforts, the rider was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Authorities shut down multiple lanes of the eastbound I-80 Freeway during the investigation, causing early morning traffic delays for commuters in the Davis area. CHP is actively searching for the dump truck and its driver, urging anyone with information or dash cam footage to contact local investigators.
We extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones of the motorcyclist during this devastating time.
Fatal Motorcycle Crashes and Hit-and-Run Incidents in California
Fatal collisions involving motorcycles—especially on high-speed corridors like Interstate 80—highlight the constant vulnerability that motorcyclists face on California’s freeways. When larger vehicles such as trucks are involved, the risk of fatal injury increases substantially due to the sheer force of impact and reduced maneuverability of the heavier vehicle.
In this tragic case, the situation is further complicated by the suspected hit-and-run by a dump truck driver. Fleeing the scene of a fatal crash is not only illegal but profoundly cruel, as it leaves victims without aid and families without closure. These incidents often trigger complex investigations involving vehicle forensics, surveillance footage, and witness testimony.
For the families of victims, the aftermath of a fatal motorcycle crash can be overwhelming—both emotionally and financially. Questions about liability, insurance claims, funeral costs, and justice often arise when they are least prepared to manage them.
California law allows families of hit-and-run victims to pursue civil claims and access victim compensation programs, but these steps can be difficult without professional guidance—especially when the at-fault party has not yet been identified.
