Davisville, FL (September 22, 2025) – A 24-year-old woman sustained serious injuries in a single-vehicle crash Sunday night in the Davisville area, while a 5-year-old child riding in the vehicle was fortunately unharmed, according to authorities.
The crash occurred around 8:13 p.m. on Highway 97, approximately half a mile north of West Highway 4 and just beyond Pine Barren Church Road. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman was driving a northbound Mazda CX-5 SUV when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered off the roadway.
The SUV reportedly struck a culvert and went airborne for roughly 60 feet before traveling an additional 100 feet and colliding head-on with an oak tree. The impact caused significant damage to the vehicle.
Emergency crews from Escambia County EMS responded to the scene, along with the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia County Fire Rescue and deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. Both the woman and the child were transported to a hospital in Pensacola for further evaluation. While the woman’s injuries were described as serious, the 5-year-old child—who was properly restrained—was not injured in the crash.
The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
Our thoughts are with the injured driver as she begins her recovery, and we are grateful the child was unharmed.
Single-Vehicle Crashes and Roadway Risks in Rural Florida
Crashes involving a single vehicle leaving the roadway are among the most common and dangerous types of collisions in rural Florida communities. This particular crash on Highway 97 in northern Escambia County serves as a sobering example of how quickly an ordinary drive can turn into a life-threatening emergency—especially when speed, roadside terrain, or sudden loss of control are factors.
The sequence of events—leaving the road, striking a culvert, becoming airborne, and colliding with a large tree—indicates a high-impact crash that likely occurred at moderate to high speeds. In rural stretches like this one, curves, elevation changes, and narrow shoulders leave little room for correction if a driver loses focus or encounters an unexpected obstacle.
Thankfully, the child passenger in this crash was properly restrained, which likely prevented any injuries. This underscores the importance of using approved car seats and booster seats appropriate for a child’s size and age. Even in violent crashes, proper restraint systems can make the difference between injury and survival.
The recovery process for a seriously injured driver can be long and physically taxing, involving hospital stays, rehabilitation, and time away from work or family responsibilities. For parents, those challenges are compounded by the emotional stress of protecting and providing for their child through it all.
