Delta County, CO (September 11, 2025) – Colorado State Patrol (CSP) is investigating a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday morning when a driver attempted to pass another vehicle on Highway 65 in Orchard City, resulting in a pedestrian being struck. The incident, reported at approximately 7:30 AM, prompted emergency responders to quickly assess the situation.
The pedestrian, who was walking southbound on the highway and crossing diagonally from the southbound shoulder toward the northbound shoulder, was struck by a Toyota Corolla traveling southbound. The driver of the Corolla, while attempting to pass another vehicle in a designated passing zone, collided with the pedestrian in the northbound lane. The impact caused the pedestrian to be thrown from the roadway, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old woman from Cedaredge, was unharmed. The identity of the pedestrian has not been released pending notification of the next of kin. CSP is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crash, though early reports suggest that the collision may have been a result of the driver’s attempt to pass in a restricted area.
Authorities temporarily closed the area to allow responders to clear the scene and investigate the incident, which caused some traffic disruptions. Updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragedy, and we wish peace and strength to the family of the pedestrian.
Pedestrian Safety and Driving Awareness in Colorado
Incidents like this tragic hit-and-run highlight the importance of pedestrian safety, particularly when walking near or across busy roads like Highway 65. While the exact cause of this incident is still under investigation, pedestrian collisions are often the result of drivers not being fully aware of their surroundings or failing to yield to individuals walking along or across roadways.
Highway 65, like many roads in Colorado, can be fast-moving, and the need for caution by both drivers and pedestrians is paramount. Drivers should always remain vigilant, particularly when navigating areas with pedestrians, and adhere to speed limits and passing regulations to avoid accidents.
Pedestrians, on the other hand, should always take extra care when crossing roads, especially highways where traffic is traveling at high speeds. Ensuring safe crossings and being visible to drivers are key steps in preventing tragic accidents like this one.
Local authorities continue to stress the importance of safe driving practices, such as not passing in restricted areas and maintaining a safe distance from pedestrians. Drivers are urged to stay alert, follow posted signs, and be prepared for any sudden road conditions.
