Derby Line, VT (July 16, 2025) – A motorcyclist sustained minor injuries Tuesday evening after a vehicle failed to stop at a posted sign and entered his path at the intersection of Caswell Ave and the I-91 Exit 29 northbound off-ramp. The collision occurred at approximately 7:09 p.m. under clear skies and dry road conditions, according to the Vermont State Police.
Investigators reported that 24-year-old Adeline Poginy of Derby Line was operating a 2006 BMW 530xi and exited the I-91 off-ramp without stopping, violating the posted signage. As she entered the intersection, her vehicle pulled into the path of an eastbound 2000 Kawasaki Vulkan 800 motorcycle driven by Nicholas Nobaris, 30, of Derby.
Nobaris attempted to brake but was unable to avoid impact, colliding with the driver’s side rear door of the BMW. The motorcycle was declared totaled at the scene, while the BMW sustained visible damage to its rear side.
Nobaris suffered a minor leg injury and was transported to North Country Hospital for treatment. Poginy was uninjured but was issued a Vermont Civil Violation Complaint for failure to stop at a stop sign and failure to yield the right of way.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Newport Ambulance provided assistance at the scene.
We wish Mr. Nobaris a quick and full recovery from his injuries.
Motorcycle Accidents and Right-of-Way Violations in Vermont
Tuesday’s crash in Derby Line emphasizes the persistent risk motorcyclists face at intersections—especially when other drivers disregard posted stop signs. Incidents involving failure to yield, as in this case, often result in collisions where motorcyclists bear the brunt of the impact, even at moderate speeds and under clear road conditions.
Motorcycles offer minimal protection compared to enclosed vehicles, meaning even low-speed crashes can result in serious injury or total vehicle loss. The impact to the rear side of the BMW, despite Nobaris’ effort to brake, demonstrates the challenge riders face when navigating intersections and reacting to sudden intrusions.
Intersections like Caswell Ave and the I-91 off-ramp can be particularly dangerous due to the mix of highway exits and local traffic. Drivers exiting ramps must maintain vigilance and obey signage to avoid pulling into the path of cross-traffic.
Statewide, Vermont continues to report a concerning number of crashes involving motorcycles at intersections. Contributing factors often include driver inattention, misjudged distances, or outright traffic violations. For motorcyclists, the consequences are frequently severe—ranging from fractures to internal injuries or worse.
Following a crash, motorcyclists face not only physical recovery but also the loss of their primary means of transportation, emotional stress, and insurance complications. Accessing medical treatment, documenting injuries, and protecting one’s legal rights are all essential steps in the aftermath of a crash.
