DeSoto County, FL (August 18, 2025) – A driver was killed Sunday evening in a collision involving a semi-truck at the intersection of State Road 760 and State Road 31, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP). The fatal crash occurred around 7:30 PM and remains under active investigation.
FHP reports that the victim was traveling east on SR 760, just west of SR 31, when they attempted to make a left turn in front of a southbound semi-tractor trailer approaching on SR 31. The front of the semi struck the side of the smaller vehicle, causing it to spin and veer off the road.
The car came to rest on the grassy shoulder. Emergency medical crews arrived on the scene and transported the driver of the smaller vehicle to a nearby hospital, where they were later pronounced dead from their injuries. The identity of the deceased driver has not been publicly released pending notification of family members.
The driver of the semi was not reported to be injured. Traffic in the area was temporarily affected while crews worked to clear the roadway and conduct a preliminary investigation.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the driver who lost their life in this tragic incident.
Dangers of Left-Turn Collisions at Rural Florida Intersections
This devastating crash in DeSoto County is a stark reminder of how quickly a seemingly routine turn can turn deadly—especially at intersections where rural highways intersect. State Road 760 and State Road 31 are frequently used by local and commercial traffic, including large semi-trucks that require longer stopping distances and more time to maneuver.
According to FHP’s preliminary findings, the smaller vehicle turned left into the path of the oncoming semi, which had the right-of-way. This scenario is one of the most dangerous on Florida roads and frequently results in T-bone or side-impact crashes—often with deadly outcomes for the smaller vehicle’s occupants.
The force of such a collision is immense, especially when a semi-truck is involved. While these vehicles are vital to regional commerce, their size and weight make any crash involving them more likely to be fatal for those in passenger vehicles. Additionally, rural roads may lack features like dedicated turn lanes or signalized intersections, further increasing the risk for misjudged gaps or turning errors.
Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution at all intersections, particularly when turning across traffic lanes. Double-checking for oncoming vehicles, waiting for clear gaps, and anticipating the speed of larger trucks can help prevent tragedies like this one.
