DeSoto Parish, LA (September 8, 2025) – A deadly collision early Saturday morning involving a saltwater tanker and a pickup truck claimed the life of a Texas man near the rural crossroads of Louisiana Highway 169 and Louisiana Highway 172.
Just after 6:30 a.m. on September 6, deputies from the DeSoto Parish Sheriff’s Office and troopers from Louisiana State Police responded to the scene of the violent two-vehicle crash. Investigators determined that a 2025 Mack Pinnacle saltwater tanker was traveling southbound on LA-169 when it entered the intersection at the same time as a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado, which was approaching from LA-172.
The two vehicles collided in the intersection under still-unclear circumstances. The pickup truck’s driver, identified as 34-year-old Zapien German of Carthage, TX, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from his vehicle upon impact. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel. Authorities confirmed that the driver of the tanker was properly restrained and did not suffer any injuries.
Louisiana State Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether speed, visibility, or other factors played a role in the collision.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. German during this difficult time.
Commercial Vehicle Accidents in Louisiana
Crashes involving commercial trucks, such as saltwater tankers, are often severe due to the size and weight disparity between these vehicles and passenger cars. Saturday’s fatal crash at the intersection of LA-169 and LA-172 underscores the grave risks present at rural intersections across Louisiana, where traffic signals may be limited and visibility can vary depending on terrain and weather conditions.
According to state data, intersections involving large trucks are a common site of serious and fatal crashes in Louisiana. In many cases, questions arise about right-of-way, signage, driver fatigue, or improper restraint use. In this incident, authorities reported that the victim was not wearing a seatbelt — a detail that likely contributed to the severity of his injuries and ultimate fatality.
The oil and gas industry’s presence in regions like DeSoto Parish increases the frequency of tanker truck traffic, which makes vigilance and adherence to road safety protocols all the more critical for both commercial and private drivers. For family members impacted by such tragedies, the aftermath includes not only grief but also the challenge of navigating investigations, insurance procedures, and potential liability matters.
