Detroit, MI – Two Injured in Early Morning Crash on I-94 Near Barrett St

September 1, 2025

Detroit, MI (September 1, 2025) – Two drivers were hospitalized following a serious collision that took place early on Monday morning on eastbound Interstate 94 in Metro Detroit. The crash occurred around 2:50 a.m. near Barrett Street and prompted extended lane closures throughout the early morning commute.

Authorities with the Michigan State Police, Second District, reported that the driver of a Ford Flex lost control while traveling eastbound, initially striking the center median wall. The vehicle then careened across all lanes of I-94 before hitting the concrete wall on the right shoulder, coming to rest while blocking the right and center lanes.

Shortly after the initial impact, a Ford Fusion traveling behind the Flex was unable to stop in time and collided with the disabled vehicle. Both drivers sustained injuries in the crash.

The 33-year-old man operating the Ford Flex suffered serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care. The driver of the Ford Fusion was also taken to a local medical facility, and while his injuries were confirmed as not life-threatening, he too required treatment following the high-speed impact.

Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials reported that all lanes of I-94 near Gratiot Avenue were closed for several hours to allow for cleanup and a preliminary investigation. Traffic was redirected at Chalmers until the highway reopened shortly after 7:20 a.m.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials working to determine what led to the loss of vehicle control in the initial stages of the crash.

Our thoughts go out to the victims as we hope for their recovery.

Highway Crashes in Metro Detroit

Monday morning’s crash on I-94 highlights the extreme risks associated with early-morning highway driving. Reduced visibility, fatigue, and high speeds during off-peak hours can quickly escalate minor driving errors into major incidents. In this case, a single-car loss of control ultimately led to a secondary collision, resulting in two hospitalizations and hours of lane closures on a major Metro Detroit corridor.

Interstate 94 is one of the busiest highways in southeastern Michigan and frequently sees serious crashes, particularly in high-traffic sections near Gratiot Avenue. When lanes are blocked or disabled vehicles remain in the roadway, the likelihood of follow-up collisions increases significantly.

The Ford Fusion’s inability to stop in time is a reminder that even alert drivers may have little opportunity to avoid crashes in situations like this. That’s why highway safety messaging continues to stress proper following distance, speed moderation, and heightened caution during low-visibility hours.

For those involved, recovery often extends beyond the hospital visit. Victims of highway crashes may face physical rehabilitation, financial setbacks, vehicle replacement challenges, and the emotional aftermath of trauma. Access to the right medical, legal, and recovery resources can make a critical difference in their path forward.
