Douglas County, KS (September 14, 2025) – Five individuals were hospitalized on Saturday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash in Douglas County at the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and North 1100 Rd, just south of Lawrence. The collision occurred around 4:45 p.m. and resulted in multiple serious injuries, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary details indicate that a vehicle traveling westbound on N 1100 Rd failed to stop at a posted stop sign. As the car entered the intersection, it was struck by a southbound vehicle traveling on US-59. The impact left both vehicles severely damaged and required an extended emergency response.
Three occupants of the westbound vehicle were injured, two of them seriously. Additionally, two people in the southbound vehicle were transported with serious injuries. Emergency crews worked to extricate the injured from the wreckage before transporting them to nearby hospitals for further treatment.
Authorities shut down the southbound lanes of US-59 for several hours to allow medics space to perform rescue operations and for deputies to conduct a thorough crash investigation. The highway was fully reopened shortly before 7:00 p.m.
Our thoughts are with all five injured individuals, and we wish them strength and healing in the days ahead.
Two-Vehicle Crashes and Stop Sign Violations in Kansas
Crashes at intersections involving stop sign violations are among the most preventable yet most damaging collisions that occur on rural and high-speed roadways. Saturday’s serious incident on US-59 and N 1100 Rd highlights how a single missed stop can result in devastating consequences for multiple families.
Douglas County is home to a mix of rural and suburban traffic patterns, where roads like US-59 see consistent speeds and intersect with smaller, less-regulated routes. These intersections can be deceptively dangerous, particularly when drivers fail to recognize or obey posted signage.
When a vehicle fails to yield at a stop sign and enters the path of oncoming traffic, the angle and force of impact often lead to side collisions or T-bone crashes, both of which can result in serious internal injuries, broken bones, and prolonged recovery periods. The extrication efforts at Saturday’s scene underscore the intensity of the crash and the care required to remove victims safely.
Victims and their families are often left with sudden medical emergencies, financial strain, and emotional trauma. Understanding your legal rights and available support systems becomes critical after such life-altering incidents.
