Dover, DE (September 2, 2025) – A tragic hit-and-run crash claimed the life of a 62-year-old woman early Sunday morning on North DuPont Highway in Dover. Police have identified the suspect and are actively searching for her, while working with regional agencies to bring her into custody.
According to the Dover Police Department, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of North DuPont Hwy at approximately 2:48 a.m. on Sunday, September 1, following reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, they found Barbara Benson of Dover critically injured. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined that Benson was hit around 2:20 a.m. by a black 2001 Toyota Avalon traveling southbound in the right lane. The driver did not stop and fled the scene. Through investigative efforts, police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Aaliyah Graves of Chestertown, Maryland. The vehicle was later located in Worton, MD, but Graves remains at large as of this report.
Authorities have issued warrants for her arrest and are urging the public to provide any information on her whereabouts. The investigation remains active.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Barbara Benson during this incredibly difficult time.
Hit-and-Run Accidents in Delaware
Hit-and-run collisions involving pedestrians are among the most devastating incidents on Delaware roadways. The crash that claimed the life of Barbara Benson reflects a broader issue: when drivers flee the scene of an injury or fatal crash, they not only commit a crime—they delay critical care and deny families the chance for immediate answers and justice.
North DuPont Highway is a major corridor through Dover, heavily trafficked by both vehicles and pedestrians. Crashes in this area are not uncommon, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is reduced. In many cases, the most serious outcomes result from speed, failure to yield, and impaired or distracted driving.
Delaware law enforcement agencies are working harder than ever to identify and hold accountable those responsible for hit-and-run crashes. Still, victims and their families often face a long road to closure—physically, emotionally, and legally.
