Pedestrian Fatalities and Hit-and-Run Crashes in Texas
Hit-and-run collisions involving pedestrians are among the most devastating types of roadway incidents in Texas. The case of Scott Wiggins on US 87 highlights the urgent need for increased awareness and accountability, especially on rural stretches of highway where visibility and lighting may be limited during early morning hours.
In 2024, Texas recorded a high number of pedestrian fatalities, with rural areas like the one near Dumas contributing to the totals. According to state traffic data, pedestrian deaths have been on the rise across the state, often involving large vehicles like truck tractors and semi-trailers.
Victims of hit-and-run crashes and their families are often left searching for justice while coping with sudden and tragic loss. When the at-fault driver flees, it not only delays justice but can also complicate insurance claims and legal proceedings. Law enforcement agencies routinely encourage anyone with information about such incidents to come forward to help bring closure to grieving families.
